Hello everyone. I hope that the first nine weeks has gone great for everyone. As the school year is now in full swing I have had the opportunity to get in all of the classrooms at least once.
At Isabella we had a simple lesson on who I am and what the counselor does. I think the children really enjoyed the lesson. Students in grades kindergarten through 3 grade got to hear the story, Someone Took My Bal by Mo Willems. Mr. WIllems is a fantastic author and the kids loved his Piggy and Elephant stories. I was impressed with how much the students already understood when it came to the concept of bullying. Students in grades 4 through 6 got to hear the story, Honestly, Red Riding Hood Was Rotten!: The Story of Little Red Riding Hood as Told by the Wolf by Trisha Speed Shaskan. I was very impressed with the students and their understanding and the comparison and contrasting the students were able to complete. At Clanton Middle School we started the year out by discussing bullying and what it means to be a bully. The students have a firm understanding of what bullying is and who to go to for help if they need it. Mrs. Davis began speaking to eighth grade students about their ARMT scores and any career plans that they may currently have. Mrs. Davis has also helped the eighth grade students get registered using Kuder, our career navigator. On October 9, 2013 the eighth grade students at Clanton and Isabella will have the opportunity to tour LeCroy Technical Center to see what classes and programs are available and how the new Career and Readiness standards come into play on making their four year plans. On October 16, 2013 the eighth grade students will be taking the EXPLORE test from ACT. My favorite part of the test is the career interest inventory because it allows students to see how prepared they are based on their performance on the academic portion of the test for college and employment. This test is very important for numerous reasons, but the number one reason is that it will help guide four year plans and diploma options. October is Bully Prevention Month, Domestic Violence Prevention Month, and Parental Involvement Month. Red Ribbon Week is also in October and we will be doing a variety of activities during this time.
